Speaker Bio

Dr. Pietro Perona is an expert of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. His work focusses on visual categorization, visual analysis of behavior and data annotation. Perona and his students have published two popular smart device apps, iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID, which you may use to identify wild plants, animals and birds from photographs.

Perona received a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley. He is currently the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology and an Amazon Fellow since 2017. Perona has published more than 200 papers and his work has been referenced more than 65,000 times.
